Do you know how to make a green smoothie?
Every day I wake up and make myself (and my husband) a smoothie (sometimes it’s green, other times its purple, or red, or orange or sometimes it’s even brown…. ).
Not sure when I started this, but it feels like I’ve been doing it forever and ever.
I love fruit and I love how I feel after a delicious smoothie.
It keeps my body running until lunch and I love how energized I feel from drinking a breakfast smoothie.
A smoothie’s main ingredient is fruits and sometimes contains nuts/seeds, milks (almond, soy, hemp, cows milk), yogurts, veggies (carrots, cucumber, beet, etc) and greens (kale, spinach, bok choy, arugula, etc).
Just to give you some smoothie ideas – here are some of my favorite fruit and vegetable smoothie combos:
- Apple, mango, spinach, frozen strawberries.
- Apple, beet, frozen blueberries, kale
- Banana, pineapple, almond milk, dates, bok choy
- Orange, carrot, almond milk, dates, spinach
- Apple, frozen strawberries, broccoli, dates, spinach
- frozen blueberries, apple, kale
- BUT, the combos can go on and on and on! The possibilities are really endless with healthy green smoothies.
Many people wonder how to make a green smoothie. Spinach is most recommended to any green smoothie newbies as it’s got such a mild taste you won’t even notice it. I also really enjoy bok choy or Kale in my smoothies.
A simple starter recipe, one of the best green smoothies:
- 1 apple, cored and sliced (*SEE FRUIT NOTE BELOW)
- 1 frozen banana, peeled (**SEE BANANA FREEZING TIP BELOW)
- 1 orange, peeled
- 1-2 deglet noor dates (pitted) – for a little extra sweetness (optional)
- 1 cup spinach
- 1/2 cup water or nut milk
Blend it all up in your blender and enjoy!
* You could replace any of the fruit with fruit of your choice, of course – or add a cucumber or some chopped carrots. Whatever you’d like.
Keep in mind that dark berries like blueberries or strawberries might change the color of your green smoothie and it might not end up green after all.
But It will still be a “green smoothie” as long as there are greens in it! duh!
**HANDY BANANA FREEZING TIP:
To freeze bananas, I usually peel them, slice them into 1 inch thick pieces, and place on a cookie sheet then put in the freezer.
After a few hours, they should be frozen.
I then either use them right away or I place slices in a ziplock bag and put back in the freezer.
The reason you freeze first before placing in ziplock freezer bag right away is that they’ll end up sticking together as they freeze and it will become a big block of banana slices that are barely usable.
Been there, done that!
When I use frozen bananas, it technically ends up with a milky consistency and is more like a delicious green shake!
